Bi-annual professional dental cleanings performed by a hygienist are essential to maintaining good oral health over a lifetime. At Franklin County Dental , our staff customizes the cleaning you receive at each appointment based on our knowledge of the health and strength of your gums and teeth. Our hygienists always have access to prescription mouth rinses, medicated gels, and similar products to help get your teeth and gums even cleaner than you can get them at home. If you have plaque, bacteria, or tartar build-up on your teeth, our hygienists will use an ultrasonic scaler to ensure your comfort while removing build-up and bringing out your cleanest, healthiest smile.
Dr. Laventure and Dr. Schuyler routinely recommend the use of dental sealants when treating our pediatric patients. A sealant is a thin piece of plastic coating that goes over the top of your child’s first and second set of molars. When children and teenagers develop tooth decay, it’s usually on the surface of one of their molars, which come in around the ages of 6 and 12. In addition to regular professional cleanings and good oral hygiene at home, sealants have been shown reduce the development and spread of tooth decay by 80% in children.
Unlike other dental procedures, our dentists don’t need to use a drill or remove any part of the structure of a tooth to apply sealants. It involves only these three steps:
- Cleaning your child’s molars with a special toothpaste
- Rubbing a dental cleansing liquid on the back teeth with a cotton ball
- Painting the sealant on the tooth
It only takes approximately one minute for the sealant to harden and provide a protective barrier against tooth decay, and a single sealant can last up to 10 years. We may also recommend dietary supplements, home gels and varnishes containing fluoride, or mouth rinses to both children and adult patients who would benefit from additional fluoride. If you need other suggestions to educate your children, encourage good pediatric dental hygiene, and even improve your own oral health, just let us know.
